There are certain realms you don’t stray into when naming a restaurant or shop. Names of wars, diseases or famous murderers spring immediately to mind. The customer just doesn’t want reminding of these terrible things, it’s a matter of simple branding and taste. The owners of this restaurant clearly haven’t read that manual so have utilised one of peacetimes worst maritime disasters in naming their place.
This could however simply be a matter of cultural differences. I was in Bangkok a couple of years ago and was in equal parts dismayed and elated to spot on a market stall a girls hooded top commemorating Hurricane Katrina. It proudly proclaimed, in diamante detailing , ”America’s Worst Natural Disaster- 1836 Killed” against a backdrop of a U.S flag in the shape of the States. Weird.
